One describes a new diatom species, Cyclotella andina, which at times is a dominant species in the plankton. The other provides a species list which includes new records for the lake and compares the flora and other structural aspects of Lake Titicaca to other tropical and temperate lakes. The roots also absorb oxygen from the air, while the tree's leaves can excrete excess salt. Associated with the tree species are a whole host of aquatic and salt-tolerant plants. Together they provide important nursery habitats for a vast array of aquatic animal species.
